Atascadero's softball team plays two at Salinas tournament

The Atascadero High softball team split two games to wrap up the first weekend of play at the Steinbeck Classic on Saturday in Salinas.

In its opener, Atascadero fell to Soquel 9-8 in eight innings, losing on a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth.

Nique Mack was 3 for 5 with a triple, two runs scored and two RBI, Mackenzie Messina was 2 for 4 with a triple and four RBI, and Jessica Rouse was 2 or 5 with two runs scored and a two-run home run in the top of the first inning for the Greyhounds.

In its nightcap, Atascadero won 10-0 in three innings.

Alese Dominguez, who lost the early game, earned the win, giving up one hit and striking out one in three innings.

Messina was 2 for 2 with three RBI, and Keara Blodgett was 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored for the Greyhounds, who will return to Salinas for the second half of the tournament April 20.

Coast Union at Orcutt Academy Tournament

The Broncos placed second in the round-robin tournament in Orcutt, defeating Providence of Burbank 18-0 in five innings.

Ellie Magnuson got the win, giving up two hits and striking out five in five shutout innings for Coast Union.

Cristina Plascencia was 3 for 4 with three runs scored and four RBI, and Maddie May was 2 for 2 with a double and five RBI for the Broncos (10-5).
