San Simeon Travel is celebrating 20 years under the ownership of John and Diana O’Regan and the expansion of its offices with an open house from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, April 5, at 1253 Knollwood Circle, Cambria.

The business, originally known as Cabrillo Travel when it was founded in San Simeon in the 1970s, had moved to the historic original old Bank of America building in Cambria before they bought the agency in 1993, John O’Regan said. Tickets were kept in the old bank vault that gave the current occupant, the Vault Gallery, its name.

The O’Regans moved the business to Cambria Village Square, becoming its first tenant, aside from the freestanding Cookie Crock building.

Renovations on the travel agency’s space, expanded now to 1,600 square feet from 700, were still underway early this week. One thing that hasn’t changed is the presence of Alex Ferguson, who has been with the company for 18 years.

O’Regan said the business has grown to a 2,500-client mailing list with addresses from coast to coast. About 1,000 people arrange a trip through the agency in any given year.

“I just got off the phone with a client in Martha’s Vineyard,” O’Regan said Friday. With only one office, the business relies on word of mouth and a website “we put a lot of money into” to grow its business, he said.

The agency tries to differentiate its services by offering many trips escorted by the O’Regans, who are leaving shortly for Portugal and South Africa.
