Identity reported for young man ejected from Jeep on Hwy. 101, killed by passing cars

Update: The 18-year-old man killed in a single-vehicle crash at the south end of Nipomo was identified by the Bakersfield Californian as Derrick Duff.

He was from Bakersfield and had been visiting Pismo Beach with two friends when the accident occurred at 2:20 a.m. Saturday, according to the CHP. The highway patrol said a Jeep was headed south on Highway 101 near the intersection with Highway 166. The Jeep’s driver hit the middle divider, then veered back into traffic.

Duff was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the Jeep, then struck by an unknown number of vehicles. N0ne of the drivers of those vehicles stopped, the CHP said.

Alcohol or drugs did not appear to be factors in the mishap, the CHP said.

Duff was a star basketball player at Bakersfield’s Highland High School, said the Californian.

Original: An 18-year-old Bakersfield man was killed in an accident on Highway 101 Saturday morning after he was ejected from the Jeep he was a passenger in, according to the CHP.

The incident occurred on the southbound lanes of Highway 101 near the intersection with Highway 166 in the South County at 2:20 a.m. when the Jeep's driver collided with the middle divider and then veered back into traffic.

One of the two passengers, who was not wearing his seat belt, was ejected from the Jeep and struck by an "unknown number of vehicles."

None of the vehicles that struck him stopped at the scene.

Alcohol and drugs were not involved in the accident.

The names of the driver and passenger, both juvenile males, were not released. The victim's name was not released either.
