When I moved to Cambria from L.A. in 1981, the power would go out every winter without fail. A good third of the streets here were still dirt roads. Upon moving 24 years ago into the house I am still renting, push-button phone service was not quite available.
I had two homebirths. The first son was born in front of a woodstove, the only heat in the house. I am not a stranger to less-than-advanced technology. I mean, I was born in 1959.
However, when I pay good money for a service promised, I expect to receive it. When this service is lacking continually, I start writing about it. Ahem.
My Internet connection is down almost more than it is up. While I don’t rely on it completely for my income, it’s the principle of the matter — I’m paying every month for nothing. Are you having the same problem?
I know roads, public services, etc. are the same. BUT, this is seemingly small change. Come on, if you say your servers are capable of handling all us customers way up in the boonies of Cambria, then by golly you’d better be able to. If your equipment is not capable of it, admit it!
I do remember conversations of old when we’d be out in front of the post office or at the market threatening not to pay our electric bill if the lights didn’t come back on soon. I can understand the power — they can’t count on every tree that’s going to take out a power grid. But the Internet?
And then, when you call them to ask for help, one of the first things they do is tell you that you can get most of your questions answered online! HA! If you want an appointment for a technician to come out, the allotted time is between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. (my last one) — like you can afford to take off work to wait all day for them!
I believe in speaking with your dollars. I don’t buy certain products or support certain businesses because I know that, even on a small scale, actions speak louder than words. We have seen it happen (Look to Green America for more info on that — if you can get online!). But, there you have it. Most of these services have you over a barrel.
There aren’t enough options, some times, to pick and choose companies. And, let’s face it, for those of us of a certain age and occupation, it’s a big part of our life.
So, if one person boycotts AT&T by refusing to pay their bill unless service is rendered, you merely get cancelled. But, I wonder what would happen if 6,000 people quit paying, all on the same day. Yes, the proverbial pipe dream, I know.
You can’t just go yelling at the poor sucker on the phone you call with your complaint. They’re just earning a living like you. But, the big greed-heads of the so-called “corporate entities” continue to fluff their nests by pillaging the environment, driving the inequity in the classes and just downright lying about how they can make your life better.
Rant, rant, rant. But, doggone it, maybe I just want to hear, just an honest word: They (AT& T) don’t seem capable of serving the outlying communities of San Luis Obispo County. Just one honest word would help! That, and keep me online for one whole day!
