Letter to the Editor

Majority favor

San Luis ObispoMarch 28, 2013

Recently a letter writer gave kudos to Sheriff Ian Parkinson for condemning gun control. Her basic premise was that the Second Amendment guarantees all citizens the right to bear arms to protect themselves.

The Second Amendment, ratified in 1791, reads, “A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” The issue of protecting oneself is not addressed in the amendment. Instead the focus is on ensuring the security of a free state.

Living, as we now do, with sophisticated weaponry to protect our country, it’s a real stretch for me to understand why we need guns to do that job. And many Americans feel the same as I do.

On March 22, Fox News stated that their polling showed a majority of Americans favor an array of new gun control proposals. If Fox can acknowledge this, why are some people so adamant about owning guns? Rather than passionately interpreting the Second Amendment incorrectly, wouldn’t it be better to focus on how we as a nation can stop senseless killing in the United States? That’s what real patriots would do.
