A Los Osos man was sentenced Tuesday to 15 years to life in prison for murdering his mother.

With his sentence, Michael Bret Van Heuver will have to serve 15 years in prison before he’s even eligible for parole. He pleaded no contest in February to second-degree murder.

According to court records, he assaulted his mother, 56-year-old Lisa Ann Van Heuver, in April 2012. A month later, the victim was taken off life support, and her son was charged with murder.

The mother and son lived in the same household. Sheriff’s deputies had responded to calls to the house before as Lisa Van Heuver, a retired contractor and computer technician, tried to help her son with his substance-abuse issues.

Michael Van Heuver had previous arrests for being drunk in public and for being under the influence of a controlled substance.
