It is difficult for me to understand why it is necessary to create a constitutional amendment to overturn the “Citizens United” Supreme Court decision, since it is based on a fairly obvious lie.
The reasoning of the court was based on the “fact” that newspapers have freedom of speech and that newspapers are corporations, so to level the playing field, freedom of speech should be granted to all corporations.
In conversations we may talk about freedom of the press, implying that the press has freedom of speech. What we really mean, of course, is that newspapers are free to publish what people write or say. A newspaper cannot speak, it can only publish — and therein lies the lie.
My limited association with lawyers has led me to believe that they are not inhibited by logic. I do believe, however, that members of the Supreme Court should have graduated from rhetoric to logic.
