Who does more?

Published: March 17, 2013

What an amazing view Parade Magazine presented in its March 10 “What People Earn” issue! Of 77 people listed, the 19 who earn (or are estimated to earn) $200,000 or more rake in 99.2 percent of the grand total of all incomes listed. The other 59 people (earning less than $200,000 each) accrue less than 1 percent of total income.

I don’t deny the enterprise and effort of entertainment and sports celebrities and of CEOs. Still, the picture is stark. Parade pictured 59 ordinary citizens who work hard at honorable jobs to keep bread on their tables and roofs over their heads, to buy health insurance and support aging relatives, and who still find time to volunteer in their local communities, yet their total earnings are about one cent for every dollar taken in by the 19 high earners.

Which group does more to make this the America we are proud of, and are they properly rewarded?
