In praise of heroes

Executive director, Red Cross of San Luis ObispoMarch 17, 2013

March is National Red Cross Month, and the American Red Cross recognizes our everyday heroes who help their community by giving of themselves — the volunteers, class takers and financial supporters who help us assist those in need throughout San Luis Obispo County.

March is also a great time to become part of the Red Cross by doing such things as developing a preparedness plan for the household, becoming a volunteer or taking a Red Cross class.

The Red Cross responds to nearly 70,000 disasters a year in this country. It provides 24-hour support to members of the military, veterans and their families; and trains more than 7 million people in first aid, water safety and other lifesaving skills every year.

In the past year, the Red Cross of San Luis Obispo County has responded to 26 local emergencies, assisted 134 military families and trained 5,800 people in lifesaving skills. Just in the month of February, we have responded to six local house fires assisting more than 30 people. We thank those whose generosity enables us to continue our work and encourage everyone to become an everyday hero during Red Cross Month by helping their community.
