Brother-sister duo pitch simultaneous complete-game wins in baseball, softball

Coast Union duo lead teams to wins over Santa Maria Saints in Cambria

Special to The CambrianMarch 14, 2013

A singular sporting synchronization played out at Coast Union High School Wednesday, March 13, as junior hurler Grant Magnuson pitched a complete game win on the baseball field while simultaneously his sister, freshman Elli Magnuson, was tossing a complete game victory on the softball field, a couple hundred yards away from her big brother.

The Bronco baseball team defeated the Santa Maria Saints in a nail-biter 3-2 — Grant’s first complete game victory — while the softball squad handled the Lady Saints, 14-4.  Ellie gave up two earned runs and went two for three at the plate while Grant gave up two hits, one earned run and pitched his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh.

Ellie and Grant’s father Mike stayed at the baseball field and rooted for his son while Kate Magnuson watched her daughter at the softball field. Kate was updated constantly on the baseball game via text messages from the baseball score-keeper Cami Spisak.

On several occasions Kate dashed towards the baseball field and peered over the center field wall to watch her son.

What were her emotions while her son and daughter were pitching their hearts out on the same campus at the same exact time? “I was floating with pride,” Kate explained. “I was so very proud of my son and my daughter yesterday.”

After those performances, did Kate believe she was likely among the proudest mothers on the Central Coast? “Oh my gosh yes! Absolutely! There’s no such thing as a bad day when you’re watching your kids do something they love to do.”
