Epitaph for a dog on stairs riles some in Avila Beach

A person’s final, heartfelt tribute to their beloved dog Fisher is causing a stir in Avila Beach.

An unknown person carved and then painted an epitaph in memory of Fisher, “the best dog ever,” into the staircase railing near Whaler’s Cover beach, which leads to Point San Luis Lighthouse.

A member of the Point San Luis Lighthouse Keepers discovered the vandalism Wednesday.

The painted blue message reads, “In loving memory of Fisher, best dog ever – Schmoe” with the dates June 9, 1998 to Jan. 16, 2013.

“While we certainly can understand the special relationship between man and his best friend, we also are saddened that something that was specifically built for the safety of our visitors has been damaged in this way,” said Kristi Blazer, executive director of the Point San Luis Lighthouse Keepers in a press release.

The stairs were built with funds from the Port San Luis Harbor District, the Coastal Conservancy, and the Point San Luis Lighthouse Keepers. The boards will be removed and replaced by volunteers of the
Point San Lighthouse Keepers.

“We simply hope that by making this incident known, we will encourage everyone to help protect not only this public space, but all public spaces, that everyone contributes to for the good of us all,” said
Balzer.
