Prep Roundup: San Luis Obispo wins its PAC 7 baseball opener

Tigers edge Righetti 1-0 in 11 innings

The San Luis Obispo High baseball team outlasted Righetti on Tuesday, winning 1-0 in 11 innings on a bases-loaded, walk-off RBI single by Brandon Mallory. 

Garrett Giovannelli scored the winning run for the Tigers and was the winning pitcher after tossing two scoreless innings, giving up four hits while striking out three and walking four. 

Shinjin Todd started for San Luis Obispo (3-3, 1-0 PAC 7) and threw nine scoreless innings, giving up six hits and two walks while striking out two.

Nick Hill was the only Tigers player with multiple hits, going 2 for 5.

Righetti had the bases loaded in the top of the 10th inning with one out, but Giovannelli struck out the next two batters to escape the jam.

Templeton 3, Morro Bay 2

The Eagles won an a bases-loaded wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge the Pirates.

Austin Alarcon, who drew a walk and advanced on bunt singles by Michael Frigon and Tyrus Yamagata, scored the winning run for Templeton (5-0, 1-0 Los Padres League).

Mac Lardner threw a complete game in the win for the Eagles, allowing two runs and five hits. 

Colt Caravalho threw six-plus innings in the loss, holding Templeton to its lowest run output of the season.

Connor Pishone was 2 for 3 with a double for Morro Bay (2-5, 0-1 LPL).

Nipomo 8, Santa Maria 0

Robby Cano (2-1) gave up one hit and struck out five in the complete-game win. 

Matt Albright was 2 for 3 with a triple and two RBI, Chase Streiff hit a triple and had two RBI, and David Stevens was 2 for 4 for the Titans (4-3, 1-0 Los Padres League).

SOFTBALL

Paso Robles 10, Cabrillo 0

Megan Clark gave up one hit over five scoreless innings in the win for the Bearcats (5-4).

Delaney Cline was 2 for 3 with four RBI, and Jenna Wookey was 2 for 4 with a double and three RBI for Paso Robles.

Morro Bay 5, Templeton 3

The Pirates scored two runs with two out in the top of the seventh inning to secure the win.

Marissa Tabares struck out seven in the complete-game win, walking one and yielding one earned run. Tabares was also 3 for 4 at the plate with two RBI.

Fallon Molnar was 3 for 4 with two RBI, and Carli Watt was 3 for 4 with a double and two runs scored for Morro Bay (3-6, 1-0 LPL).

Templeton’s Kristina Raine was 3 for 4 with a double and two runs scored, and Ashley Stevens was 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Corinne Barto (0-1) gave up five hits and one earned run in four innings in the loss for the Eagles (1-4).

Nipomo 7, Santa Maria 0

Courtney Cuzick struck out 17 in a complete-game one-hitter for the Titans.

Ashley Ruiz was 2 for 2 with a two-run home run and three runs scored for Nipomo (6-0), and Destiny Fryckman and Selina Delfin each hit an RBI double for the Titans.

Coastal Christian 23, North County Christian 5, 5 innings

Roni Garrison had 10 strikeouts in the complete-game win for the Conquerors, and also went 3 for 3 at the plate with a triple, four runs scored and four RBI as Coastal Christian won its season debut in its Coast Valley League opener.

Garrison gave up one earned run on two hits, walked 10 and hit two batters in the win.

Sara Henschel was 2 for 4 with five RBI, and Isabelle Unger was 1 for 3 with two RBI, a double and four runs scored for the Conquerors.

Elise Pedone was 2 for 2 with two RBI, and Liz Crespo was 1 for 1 with an RBI and a run scored for the Crusaders (0-6, 0-1 CVL). Crespo had five strikeouts in four innings in the loss.

Every batter in the starting lineup for the Crusaders had at least one hit.

BOYS TENNIS

Paso Robles 9 (76), Cabrillo 9 (75)

Cooper Austin swept 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 in singles in the win for the Bearcats (1-3, 1-1 PAC 7), who won one more overall game than Cabrillo to earn the tie-breaker.

The doubles team of Stevie Stark and Mayer Pohlod won 7-5, 6-1, 7-5, and Evan Serpa won 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 in singles for Paso Robles.

San Luis Obispo 17, Atascadero 1

The Tigers (5-1, 2-0 PAC 7) won all nine sets in doubles to cruise past the Greyhounds.

The doubles team of Cole Stephenson and Brandon Lippold led the way for San Luis Obispo, winning 6-4, 6-2, 6-1.

Nick Johnson swept 6-4, 6-2, 6-1 in singles for the Tigers.

Arroyo Grande 13, Righetti 5

Derek Lakowske swept in singles 6-4, 6-0, 6-3 as the Eagles (6-2, 2-0 PAC 7) beat the Warriors in Santa Maria.

The Arroyo Grande doubles team of Cole Laughton and Tyler Anderson swept 7-5, 6-2, 6-4.

Templeton 18, Coast Union 0

 

Jacob Goldstein and Adam Jussila their doubles sets 6-3, 6-1, 6-0 for Templeton (5-0).

 

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Arroyo Grande 3, Santa Ynez 0

Andrew Midyett had 12 kills in the Eagles’ 25-10, 27-25, 25-15 victory.

Wyatt Bishop had five kills and seven blocks, and Jack Empey had 42 assists for Arroyo Grande (3-0).

Mission Prep 3, Morro Bay 2

Jack Mooney had 15 kills and 25 digs as the Royals rallied from two sets down to win 13-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-20, 15-12 in Morro Bay.

Chris Garner had 15 kills and two aces, and Sean O’Conner had 24 assists and nine digs for Mission Prep (2-2).

BOYS GOLF

San Luis Obispo 377, St. Joseph 451

Grady Smith shot a 2-over 73 at Dairy Creek Golf Course to medal for the Tigers (4-0, 2-0 PAC 7).

Adam Zakaria shot a 74, and Michael Baigle added a 75 for the Tigers.

Arroyo Grande 445, Pioneer Valley 535

Alex Linn was the medalist at Cypress Ridge Golf Course, shooting a 7-over 79 for the Eagles.

Conner Sandman added an 82 for Arroyo Grande (4-0, 2-0 PAC 7).
