Guns are not the problem

Published: March 11, 2013

I wish to personally thank Sheriff Ian Parkinson for expressing his support for the Second Amendment and pointing out the flaws in the current administrations feeble attempt to solve our gun violence problem.

More gun regulations won’t eliminate this dilemma; a lack of values in the criminal element and the looming gaps in the mental health community are at the root of the problem. If someone were to drive intoxicated, resulting in an accident with a busload of kids, would our politicians push to ban certain types of automobiles or limit the engine size? People have been committing crimes toward humanity for years. We didn’t blame or try to ban airplanes or limit the amount of fuel they carry after 9/11,
because we realized the main culprits of the incident were the hijackers.

Why should we change our way of thinking when it comes to gun violence? We’re an intelligent people, but some individuals are reacting irrationally and not using common sense. We elect professionals like Sheriff Parkinson to stand guard at the gates, but we don’t call on his expertise to find a solution and help eliminate or lessen gun violence. I believe he’s a better choice than the politicians.
