Several Arroyo Grande police officers have been on the Arroyo Grande High School campus today to ensure student safety after an apparent threat was made last week by a male student.

“Everything seems to be under control,” Arroyo Grande police Cmdr. Kevin McBride said about 1:15 p.m., less than two hours before the school day ends.

Police have received several calls from worried parents, he said. Lucia Mar district spokeswoman Amy Jacobs said the school had a higher number of absences today, but didn’t have an exact number.

McBride reiterated that the incident is being investigated as a non-criminal matter because no specific threat was made. No arrests have been made, and police are leaving discipline up to the school. The student was suspended after the incident, McBride said.

Police got involved after staff at the high school learned of the alleged threat. According to McBride, a male and a female student were conversing on Facebook on Feb. 28 when the boy told the girl not to come to school today because something was going to happen.

“There was no specific threat, no mention of any weapons,” McBride said Wednesday.

The girl alerted school staff, who did a thorough assessment of the incident and notified Arroyo Grande police.

According to a statement released by the Lucia Mar Unified School District on Wednesday, “Appropriate precautions have been taken and students and parents can be assured that the campus is a safe environment.”

More than 2,000 students attend Arroyo Grande High, located at Fair Oaks Avenue and Valley Road.
