Herbert Brown III, 29, of Paso Robles was arrested Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, on suspicion of child abuse likely to result in death. Original story »

A Paso Robles man accused of killing his 2-year-old daughter pleaded not guilty Monday to murder.

Herbert Brown III, 29, appeared in San Luis Obispo County Superior Court for his arraignment. He was arrested last week on suspicion of physically abusing the child, who police said had visible injuries to her head and body.

The girl was not breathing when paramedics arrived Feb. 18 at a residence on the 200 block of Santa Ysabel Avenue in Paso Robles. She was eventually taken to a Bay Area hospital, where she died the next day.

Brown has one prior offense in San Luis Obispo County: a misdemeanor for resisting or obstructing a peace officer. Brown pled no contest to that 2009 charge and served five days in jail.

He is now one of two county residents currently charged with killing a child. Erin Martin, also of Paso Robles, has pleaded not guilty to murder in the 2010 death of her 31⁄2-month-old child.

Brown is scheduled to appear in court again March 13.
