Letter to the Editor

A token cyclist fee

Published: February 24, 2013

Neither Mr. Chris Black nor Mr. Andrew Wright get it in their rebuttal letters that suggest that bicyclists should not share in the cost of maintaining roads.

First, bicycles are vehicles. Dogs and people are not!

Second, not all cyclists are car owners. If we were to follow Mr. Wright’s logic, if you owned more than one car, you should only pay one registration fee!

Any vehicle that uses roads should pay a registration fee to help maintain them. Motorists not only pay registration fees and taxes on gasoline for road maintenance, but they must also pass a test to show knowledge of the rules of the road. Cyclists get a free pass, and now Mr. Wright wants a tax break as well!

No one is discouraging bicycle use, just suggesting a token fee to help with road upkeep.
