Cuesta Roundup: Cuesta baseball team rallies but falls to Saddleback

Cuesta College's baseball team fell to Saddleback 11-9 in a nonconference game Friday.

Saddleback (8-8) led 8-0 after two innings, 11-2 entering the bottom of the seventh inning and held off a furious Cougars rally.

Cuesta had three runs in the eighth inning and four in the ninth, but the batter representing the potential tying run flew out to end the game.

The Gauchos’ designated hitter, Eric Ehlow, was 2 for 4 with a double and five RBI, and Brandon Cody was 4 for 5 with a two-run home run and three runs scored. 

Evan Manarino (4-0) gave up two runs, one earned, four hits, and four walks in five innings for Saddleback (8-2). Anthony Shew picked up his second save of the season.

Cuesta catcher Parker Hindle was 3 for 6 with two RBI, and Spencer Ruggles, who entered in the eighth inning, was 2 for 2 with a two-run home run.

After six events, the Cougars men have 211 points and are in first place on the opening day of the two-day meet, with Orange Coast second with 180 points.

Cuesta’s men won the 400-yard medley relay in 3 minutes, 29.15 seconds, and the 200 free relay in 1:25.72.

Dragan Dinic was second in the 50 freestyle in 21.2 for the Cougars.

In the women’s team standings, the Cougars are in 16th place.
