Well-seasoned lineup means this could be Coast Union's year

Head coach Brian Machado is raising the bar for his baseball squad this year. Last year the Broncos ended up with a 7-3 record in the Coast Valley League (8-11 overall) and won a playoff game, but Machado expects and hopes that the players who are now juniors will have breakout years.

“We can’t wait for next year,” Machado enthused. “We can’t wait for next year – we have to do it this year.” He is referring to that core group of juniors who were the starting players at the varsity level in their freshman seasons.

He’s talking about first baseman Tommy Howard, third baseman/pitcher Grant Magnuson, pitcher/shortstop Quentin Raethke and outfielder Emmany Godinez — all of whom are experienced juniors this year.

“They got kicked around a bit in their freshmen year,” Machado explained, adding that part of the fun of coaching high school student athletes is watching them grow. Now, “It’s their turn,” he said. “It’s their turn.”

The team that Machado is particularly revved up to challenge in the Coast Valley League is Valley Christian Academy, a school that placed second behind North County Christian last year. Machado believes that North County Christian won’t be as strong as they were last year.

“We’re shooting for Valley Christian Academy. It’s going to be exciting this year. I’m confident,” he added.

The Broncos open up the season at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, against visiting Mission Prep. The game will be broadcast on KTEA-FM (103.5) and streams live on www.ktea-fm.com.
