Cal Poly moves ahead of UC Santa Barbara in Big West women's basketball race

Mustangs win in Santa Barbara, breaking a tie for third in the Big West

Molly Schlemer scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Cal Poly women’s basketball team to a 65-56 victory at UC Santa Barbara on Saturday.

The Mustangs (14-9, 8-4 Big West Conference), who led by as many as 17 points in the second half, broke a third-place tie with the Gauchos (11-13, 7-5).

Kayla Griffin added 15 points and seven rebounds, Ariana Elegado scored 12, and Jonae Ervin had a team-high 11 assists without a turnover for Cal Poly.

With the score tied at 2 early on, the Mustangs went on a 16-0 run to blow the game open, holding UC Santa Barbara without a basket for over eight minutes, and led by 10 at halftime.

Cal Poly outrebounded the Gauchos (38-34) and outshot UC Santa Barbara from the field (45 percent to 35 percent).
