A Cal Poly sophomore died early Sunday just outside the Poly Canyon Village residence hall.

Police do not suspect foul play in the death of Brandon Huang, a 20-year-old majoring in biology; however, the cause of death is being investigated.

University police dispatch received a call at 11:56 p.m. Saturday from a student stating that a male student was found and was not breathing. University police performed CPR on Huang but could not revive him. He was taken to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo, where he was pronounced dead.

When asked whether alcohol was a factor in the death, Keith Humphrey, Cal Poly vice president for student affairs, said, “Possibly, but it’s premature to say what caused the death. We are not ruling anything in or out.”

In an email to the Cal Poly community Sunday afternoon, Cal Poly President Jeffrey Armstrong wrote that Huang “passed away while returning to his residence hall from off campus.”

Armstrong also offered his condolences. “We care about each member of our Cal Poly community, and our thoughts are with Brandon’s family and loved ones,” he wrote.

Huang had a Facebook profile that indicated he was from Orinda, a city east of Berkeley. Updates about a pending memorial service will be posted on the Dean of Students website at .
