Lauren Moreno started her Cal Poly softball career off with a bang, hitting a walk-off home run Friday morning as the Mustangs opened the 2013 season with a 3-2 victory over New Mexico at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
The Mustangs dropped their second game of the day, falling 3-2 to Western Michigan.
In the season opener against the Lobos (0-3), Cal Poly (1-1) fell behind by one in the third inning but responded in the fifth when Celina Lafrades hit a two-run single.
After New Mexico tied the score at 2-2, Moreno led off the bottom of the seventh with her first hit as a Mustang, which gave the team the walk-off win.
Jordan Yates (1-0) struck out four Lobos in the complete game victory.
Cal Poly took a 1-0 lead against Western Michigan (1-0) at the top of the first as Breana West doubled to right to score Kim Westlund. The Mustangs doubled their advantage an inning later when Ashley Romano drove in catcher Shea Williams.
Western Michigan tied the game with two runs in the third and fourth innings and chased Cal Poly’s starter Nicole Innamorato from the circle.
Michigan scored a walk-off run in the bottom of the inning, and Yates took the loss for Cal Poly
after working four innings of relief.
Cal Poly continues Kajikawa Classic action today versus No. 13 Arizona at 8 a.m. and No. 21 Stanford at 10:30 a.m.
