Letter to the Editor

Read the Constitution

Published: February 4, 2013

Regarding the letter “Amendment intent” (Jan. 25) by Bill Mahin: I commend Mr. Mahin’s candor explaining that some people buy guns “because they are afraid of the government itself or what its actions will create.”

I would add that they usually cite the Second Amendment as their authority. There is the problem.

We have different guidance for dealing with such issues. It’s titled “The Constitution of the United States.” It’s served well ever since its creation by providing a peaceful way for government to operate (with the exception of the Civil War, wherein the use of guns and violence killed and maimed thousands of our ancestors).

The Second Amendment is only one sentence in the Constitution/Bill of Rights; put there to ensure “a well regulated militia.” Read it.
