In a recent column, Charles Krauthammer fretted about what might be inferred from President Barack Obama’s nomination of Chuck Hagel as secretary of defense. He worries that it means Obama wants to decrease military spending, go harder on Israel, and go easier on Iran. From your lips to God’s ears, Mr. Krauthammer, from your lips to God’s ears.
And for those who are disturbed by Hagel’s mention of the term “Jewish lobby,” I would point out that Haaretz, the premier Israeli daily newspaper, is not afraid of the term. Just Google “Jewish lobby” and Haaretz.
And if you want to do some reading, a good place to start would be the Haaretz article, “For Mideast peace, Israel must cut off U.S. Jewish lobby.” The point is made that when the U.S. and Israel take the advice of Sheldon Adelson and his ilk, it is bad for both countries.
The way it’s going now with Hagel’s Senate hearings, I doubt that Krauthammer or anybody else will learn anything about anything that matters for the future, since John McCain and Lindsey Graham seem to be only interested in getting TV face time and electioneering, while haranguing Hagel about The Surge in W’s Iraq war (which was in 2007).
