I’m down here from the East Bay primarily to do the iconic bike ride up Highway 1 between Morro Bay and Monterey.
Unfortunately, due to Caltrans’ recent chip-seal job, much of that ride is virtually unrideable for cyclists.
It’s very sad. As word spreads among the cycling community, I fear your area will be losing some of the tourist dollars that cyclists spend here.
As an example, I would have stayed in Monterey and cycled down to the north end of the chip-seal and back if I had known about it.
I understand the problem is being looked into by Caltrans, which is encouraging.
You have a wonderful opportunity to not only fix the problem, but to go beyond and make a cycling-friendly surface that would be an attraction in itself to add to the world-renowned gift that nature has given your area.
