Amendment intent

Published: January 25, 2013

I think the “why” of the Second Amendment is important in understanding the intent of the amendment itself. And, no, I’m not a licensed psychic. The colonists had just fought and won their freedom from the tyranny of the king. They possessed the same firearms (weapons) as the British, but with superior leadership, tactics and, yes, divine inspiration, defeated superior forces! Rarely has the world witnessed such an accomplishment. Mere men and women set this country on a course to greatness because of firearms!

Let’s not equivocate — law-abiding citizens are purchasing firearms because they fear, rightly or wrongly, the direction the government is taking. They are buying guns because they are afraid of the government itself or what its actions will create. Thomas Jefferson said: “When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty!”
