A documentary will shed light on school bullying on Tuesday.

Cal Poly is teaming up with the San Luis Obispo County Community Foundation to offer a free screening of “Bullied: A Student, a School and a Case that Made History,” a 2010 documentary produced by the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Teaching Tolerance program.

Directed by Bill Brummel and Geoffrey Sharp, “Bullied” tells the story of Jamie Nabozny, who suffered verbal and physical abuse at the hands of his classmates in Ashland, Wis.

When school officials failed to stop the attacks, Nabozny filed a federal lawsuit against his school district — resulting in a landmark federal court decision that a public school could be held accountable for not stopping anti-gay abuse.

Following the film, Cal Poly Pride Center and Disability Resource Center students will participate in a panel discussion of their experiences in middle school and high school to raise awareness about bullying.

The event takes place 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Chumash Auditorium in Cal Poly’s University Union in San Luis Obispo.
