I often ride Highway 1 north of Cambria with a group of bicyclists. This stretch is considered one of the most scenic coastal roads in the USA. However, the 3/8-inch aggregate chip seal resurfacing from Cambria to the county line has now made this road unsafe. Even cars have been damaged.
I understand that chipped paint and damaged windshields occur daily. As bike touring groups, car clubs and tourists hear about these problems, they are likely to think twice. Many will decide to go elsewhere, and our businesses will take the financial brunt.
Fundraisers that bring many people to the Central Coast will stop having an event involving this designated area. If the road conditions do not change, it will be known for a different and less appealing place.
