We were recently notified by Anthem Blue Cross of a health insurance premium rate increase. The increase is 18.2 percent, more than $150 higher than our current monthly premium, and is probably an attempt to cover expenses for uninsured individuals.
Regardless of Anthems rationale, we have sent letters to our state and federal representatives, and Mr. Dave Jones, California Insurance Commissioner, to elicit their assistance in initiating legislation to give Mr. Jones the authority to adjust rate increases to fairer level.
Although 37 other states can regulate insurance companies, California does not provide its commissioner with that power. We also enjoin other Anthem subscribers to contact their governmental representatives and share the frustration (and anger) we feel.
