More than 500 students at Georgia Brown Elementary School in Paso Robles got a taste of healthy living Monday, courtesy of a local chef.

Thirty Cal Poly athletes helped Gregg Wangard, a chef at The Cliffs Resort in Pismo Beach, serve a hot gourmet lunch to students at his daughter’s school.

Wangard will offer a cooking demonstration for parents at the school Wednesday featuring fresh produce donated by North County farmers markets.

The gourmet food is part of a weeklong, schoolwide program sponsored in part by the UC CalFresh Nutrition Education Program. Cal Poly Athletics collaborates with the program to teach the importance of a healthy lifestyle that includes nutrition and physical activity.

Students are also participating in a competition sponsored by local pediatrician Laura Herzberg and Community Health Centers to make Spanish-language posters highlighting the five food groups.
