I have been riding Highway 1 as a cyclist for 26 years. Within that span of time, my familys business has also evolved to depend on Highway 1 for our living. I am floored at the recent resurfacing of our pristine stretch of highway.
Not only is the surface rough, but the loose debris creates a danger that did not exist prior. Many organizations have organized rides through the same area by bicycle on a yearly basis. In addition, professional cycling races such as the Tour of California promise future potential revenue and exposure critical to our business success.
With the state of California in economic ruin, it is surprising that Caltrans could even conjure wasting their time and our money on such a disservice to not only the cycling community but tourism in general.
