The Cambria Tourism Board has announced it will host a public, open forum meeting for all interested community members, and especially nonprofit groups, to learn about the board.

The board is in the process of reaching out to inform the members of the community about what it is, how and why it has funds available and how it decides what qualifies for funding assistance.

The board is funded by a 2 percent levy on visitors’ lodging bills. Half goes to the county Business Improvement District for tourism, the other half — about $300,000 a year — stays with local entity.

The upcoming forum is intended to spread the word about the board’s mission, goals and objectives and how the community can make a difference in creating sustainable tourism that will benefit the preservation of the area’s pristine environment, according to a media release.

The presentation will include an introduction of current board members, a PowerPoint lasting about 15 minutes and a question-and-answer period.

There will also be presentation about a new approach toward tourism called the “Stewardship Traveler Program” and about the efforts of business improvement districts countywide to develop a 101-mile “Discovery Route” spanning 10 different unincorporated communities, including activities unique to each area.

The meeting is set to begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, at Rabobank, 1070 Main St., Cambria. Snacks and beverages will be provided.
