Support for the proposed Morro Bay wastewater treatment plant upgrade continues to collapse.

At a meeting Monday, the Cayucos Sanitary District passed a series of motions withdrawing its support for plans to rebuild the treatment plant at its current location. The California Coastal Commission will hear the sewer project at its Thursday meeting in Pismo Beach.

Last week, the Morro Bay City Council passed a resolution withdrawing its support for the current project, citing numerous problems with the project outlined in a Coastal Commission staff report having to do with its location close to the beach and Morro Creek.

The board of directors of the sanitary district took its opposition to the project one step farther than Morro Bay and passed a resolution asking that the application before the Coastal Commission be withdrawn. The Morro Bay Council’s resolution withdrew the city’s support of the project but stopped short of asking that the application be withdrawn.

In light of this, the Cayucos directors approved sending a letter to Morro Bay asking that the city rescind its resolution and join the district in asking the application be withdrawn. It is unclear whether the city will be able to act on the request before Thursday's meeting.
