UPDATE 3:53 p.m. Tuesday: The California Highway Patrol has identified the two people involved in a vehicle versus pedestrian accident on Highway 1 near Kansas Avenue on Monday morning.
Andrew Frank, 38, of San Luis Obispo was struck about a quarter of a mile south of Kansas Avenue by a vehicle driven by Jeremy Mergenthalter, 38, of Placerville. Frank suffered serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center, said Officer J.W. Townsen.
The investigation is ongoing, and police are trying to determine whether Frank was under the influence of drugs or alcohol and what he was doing in the highway. Mergenthalter was not under the influence, Townsen said.
Original story: The CHP is responding to reports of a vehicle hitting a pedestrian on Highway 1 near Kansas Avenue and San Luis Obispo County Jail just before 8:30 a.m. Monday, according to the CHP's incident log.
A driver reported hitting someone who stumbled into the road, according to initial reports. The pedestrian then fled the scene.
The driver's name and other information weren't immediately available.
County Jail reportedly told the CHP that the pedestrian may have been a man that the jail released, but the clothing description wasn't an exact match, the log says.
