Hwy. 1 through Big Sur to reopen completely after rockslides

Published: December 28, 2012

Highway 1 through Big Sur will be open without restrictions starting at 5 p.m. Friday, Caltrans has announced.

Several slides blocked the route Sunday after a weekend of heavy rain. All but one, near Partington Ridge Road north of Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park and south of the Coast Gallery, were cleared Monday.

A single traffic lane was opened there Thursday. Traffic will be restricted again starting at 7 a.m. Monday so repairs to the road can be completed. Delays of up to 20 minutes are expected.

About 4,250 vehicles pass along that part of the highway each day during peak months and an average of 2,600 per day over the course of a year, according to a 2003 Caltrans traffic study, meaning fewer than 2,600 vehicles per day would be expected along the road in winter months.

All businesses remain open. For current road information, call Caltrans’ Big Sur traffic hotline at 888-836-0866.
