A 23-year-old Santa Maria man was killed Thursday evening in a single-car accident on Highway 166.
The unidentified man was driving a 1998 silver Volkswagen Passat west on the highway near Pine Canyon at 9:50 p.m. when he allowed the car to drift to the right while negotiating a curve in the road, according to a California Highway Patro news release.
The driver then veered back the left and lost control of the vehicle which traveled up an embankment, overturned and came to rest on its right side. The driver was not wearing a seat belt and sustained fatal injuries in the accident.
