A 21-year-old Oregon man was cited for hauling an unsafe load after a Mitsubishi Eclipse rolled off his flatbed truck, down an offramp from Highway 101 and into a San Luis Obispo bus stop enclosure shortly after noon Thursday, police said.
Police, who described the incident as bizarre, said Daniel Conrow, from Pilot Rock, Ore., was headed north on Highway 101 at 12:45 p.m., hauling the Eclipse on his flatbed. He did not have it properly secured, police said, and, as Conrow approached the Grand Avenue offramp, the car rolled off the truck.
Driverless, the Mitsubishi rolled down the offramp, through the intersection with Grand Avenue and into the bus stop enclosure at Grand and Abbott, where it came to rest.
Conrow, unable to pursue his runaway vehicle, continued on Highway 101 to the next offramp and drove back to the scene, where he identified himself to police.
Nobody was hurt. But the bus enclosure was damaged beyond repair.
