A salute to givers

San Luis ObispoDecember 26, 2012

The Central Coast gave to kids in abundant amounts this Christmas. For 13 years, Marine Corps League Detachment 680 has run the Toys For Tots program for Toys for Tots Foundation, fielding an amazing crew to work with the public and businesses for toys given to nonprofit groups to get into the hands of needy families.

Our partners, Salvation Army, Loaves and Fishes, Toy Bank, Cambria Anonymous Neighbors, and County SAFE have done a masterful job: 11,000 kids and 17,831 toys donated/distributed in San Luis Obispo County alone, including 120 bikes given and assembled by employees of San Luis Garbage Company and their families.

The Central Coast is an amazing place, growing the Toys For Tots campaign from a minor role in the national Toys for Tots operations in 1999 to third in the nation in 2010. As our 650 volunteers age, we have had to alter operations. For the first time, Northern Santa Barbara County, with one-third the total of the collection and recipients, took on the campaign there under the sponsorship of Marine Corps League Detachment 1340.

We salute and thank everyone who took the time to think of others and contributed so generously for a widespread, all-encompassing Merry Christmas.
