Correction: An earlier version of this story attributed the $250,000 grant for completion of French Hospital's hybrid surgical suite to Grant and Donna Hoag of San Luis Obispo. However, the grant is from the George Hoag Family Foundation, a Santa Monica-based private philanthropic organization established in 1940 by the late Grace and George Hoag Sr.

Construction has begun on an approximately $8 million hybrid surgical suite at French Hospital Medical Center.

Part of a $30 million hospital modernization project, the Advanced Cardiac Hybrid Surgical Suite will be the only one of its kind between Los Angeles and San Francisco, the hospital said. It will allow multiple surgical procedures to be completed in one space, reducing the need for transporting patients or scheduling additional surgical procedures.

The suite was made possible in part by a recent $250,000 donation by the George Hoag Family Foundation. “We believe it is important to have the most advanced cardiac technology close to home,” Grant Hoag said in a recent news release.

The suite will combine an advanced cardiovascular catheterization lab, interventional radiology and operating room for non-invasive and open-heart procedures.

The combination of multiple specialties in one room will allow for minimally invasive procedures, and removes the need to move the patient from one space to another in the event of a complication that requires open-heart surgery.

The suite is expected to be completed in about 18 months.
