UPDATE:Two men are in custody following a high-speed chase this morning in the North County.

The incident began at 7:10 a.m. at Highways 1 and 46 when a California Highway Patrol Unit attempted to stop a car that had a Sheriff's Office "be on the lookout" warning, said CHP Officer Adrian Ayala. The vehicle fled the scene at rates of speed that exceeded 100 miles per hour.

Officers set up a spike strip but the vehicle avoided it and continued toward Templeton. During the chase, one of the CHP units lost control and went off the road into a culvert. The officer sustained minor injuries.

The chase continued into Templeton where officers unsuccessfully tried to stop the car using a PIT maneuver. The suspects fled the vehicle when it reached Highway 101 and San Ramon Road.

Both suspects were arrested after a foot pursuit with officers. Several schools in the Templeton and Atascadero area were put in lockdown as a result of chase.

"We were lucky the Highway Patrol was on the scene," said Dan Eller of Cambria, who witnessed the chase. "They put their own lives at risk to protect the public."
