Sheriff's Office to give local kids free wheels

This Wednesday, the county Sheriff’s Office will play Santa Claus.

The department is giving away several bicycles to underprivileged children as part of its annual Christmas Bike Giveaway.

Inmates at the County Jail’s Honor Farm facility off Highway 1 have been refurbishing bicycles donated by the community for local kids since 1989, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release.

The Christmas Bike Giveaway program nearly suffered a setback last month when a fire damaged a laundry building at the Honor Farm, which houses low-risk prisoners. Authorities later determined the Nov. 12 blaze was caused by an electrical problem.

Sheriff’s Office staff will distribute some of the refurbished bikes to children at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Honor Farm before delivering the rest to various locations throughout the county.
