Prep Roundup: Morro Bay girls basketball team rolls to another big road victory

Pirates advance to championship game at Napa Tournament

Hannah Gilbert had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead Morro Bay High girls basketball to a 54-31 win over Davis High at the Napa Tournament on Friday night.

The Pirates (6-2) pulled away by outscoring Davis 26-13 in the second half. Sierra Schwellenbach had 16 points, and Jerrica Crosby had nine points, nine rebounds, and four assists.

Morro Bay plays for the championship today at 3 p.m. against Nevada Union High.

San Luis Obispo wins twice

Christine Freberg scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Tigers to a 40-27 victory over Kings Christian at the Farmersville Tournament.

Freberg had four of San Luis Obispo’s five 3-point goals and four rebounds.

Erica Chandler had 14 points and had seven rebounds for the Tigers.

San Luis Obispo (5-6) later defeated Paramount 51-7, led by Chandler’s 17 points. Freberg added eight points.

Coast Union 53, Maricopa 31

Reagan Kniffen and Roxy Mertens scored 11 points apiece in the Broncos’ home win over the Indians. 

Kniffen added five assists, and Mertens had six assists, seven rebounds and two steals for Coast Union. Crystal Nunez had eight points and  eight rebounds for the Broncos (2-3, 1-1 Coast Valley League).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Arroyo Grande 63, Fillmore 31

Bobby Keffury had 15 points, Carson Wack had nine points four steals and four assists, and the Eagles defeated Fillmore in their opening game at the Carpinteria Tournament.

DeSean Scott had 12 points, Brennan Rivera had seven points and six rebounds and Matt Willkomm had six points and five assists for Arroyo Grande, which opened the game with a 19-3 run.

Sylmar 43, San Luis Obispo 36

David Thoresen led San Luis Obispo with 18 points in a loss at St. Joseph’s National Prep Classic.

Coast Union 58, Maricopa 21

Logan Brandt had 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Broncos (4-6, 1-1) to their first Coast Valley League victory.

Quinten Raethke had 14 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds for Coast Union, and Nehum Hernandez added 12 points.

Midland 40, Coastal Christian 30

Shane Borgstrom had 11 points and eight rebounds, but the Conquerors (1-2) fell on the road.

Mitchell Rey had nine points and five rebounds, and Thomas Lindstaedt had five points and eight rebounds for Coastal Christian.

Shandon 45, North Co. Christian 42

Hector Rangel had 28 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals to lead Shandon (2-1, 2-0 CVL) over North County Christian.

Jesus Reyes added six points and 15 rebounds for the Outlaws.

Nolan Cannon had a double-double with 15 points and 19 rebounds for North County Christian (1-3, 0-2). Nathan Cedillo had 18 points. 

BOYS SOCCER

Garces Tournament

Morro Bay (7-2-1) fought back after a 1-0 deficit in the first half to defeat Tulare Union 3-2 at the Garces Tournament in Bakersfield. 

The Redskins led 1-0 at halftime. The Pirates answered in the second half with goals by Daniel Abbiati and Jackson Chavez to make the game 2-1. 

After Tulare tied the score in the second half, Morro Bay’s Joel Wilkie scored the game-winner for the Pirates.

DC VanBeurden, Holt Alden Jr. and Chavez all had assists.

Morro Bay goalkeeper Jeremy Neilson had four saves including a key one late to preserve the win.

Patrick Hammer scored the lone goal for Atascadero (3-5-1) in its 2-1 loss to McFarland. Brian Kirkpatrick had the assist, and goalkeeper David Hernandez had three saves.

Ben Jimenez scored for Nipomo off an assist from Aaron Robles in its 2-1 loss to Bakersfield. Johann Ayala had four saves in goal for the Titans (4-5-2).

San Marcos 3, Arroyo Grande 0

The Eagles (5-5) fell to the Royals on the road.

GIRLS SOCCER

Garces Tournament

Morro Bay (2-6) defeated West 4-1. Michelle Cordova and Sadie Robbins each had two goals and an assist for Pirates.

Coast Union (1-3-1) won 4-2 against McFarland (5-2-1).

Coast Union’s Cristina Plasencia had a goal and two assists, Maddy May had a goal and an assist, Remy Corbet had a goal and an assist, and Itzel Saavedra an assist and a goal.

GIRLS WATER POLO

Paso Robles 15, St. Joseph 6

Erika Smeltzer had four goals to lead the Bearcats (7-4, 1-1 PAC 7) in their home win over the Knights. 

Laileha Vermey scored a goal and made eight saves in her first time playing goalie in her career. Shannon Rees had two goals and made seven saves in goal. Zoe Zepp, Rebecca Tobey, and Kylie Pugh each scored two goals apiece. Bailee Magnuson and Lauren Sowerby each scored one goal.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Wright signs National Letter of Intent

Coastal Christian announced that Koral Wright has signed a National Letter of Intent to play at Texas A&M International.

Wright was named first team all-Coast Valley League this past season.
