Bronco freshman all-around athlete Lane Sutherland has been named to the All-CIF-Southern Section football team for Division 1 in 8-man football. In his first year as a high school player Southerland played middle linebacker and also carried the ball as a running back for Coast Union.
He was consistently among the leading tacklers on defense; he returned two interceptions for touchdowns and recovered five fumbles for Coast Union. On offense he scored three touchdowns as well.
Head coach Chuck Garcia referred to Sutherland as the backbone of the defense for the Broncos. He never came off the field all year long, Garcia continued. Hes one of those guys who helps the team in so many ways.
Garcia noted that Sutherland was the only freshmen named to the All-CIF team. Sutherland is out for basketball this season and will also be playing baseball in the spring, his favorite sport according to an interview he did with The Cambrian this past summer.
His mother, Rene Sutherland said when Lane was a little boy he was so strong and he loved sports. Given that he has great talent and athleticism, and figures to excel in three sports, is he the kind of young man who can keep a level head notwithstanding generous praise?
Hes exactly that kind of kid, Rene answered. He has this way of slowing things down during games and hes really smart. He never gets frustrated and when things go wrong he just moves on.
He gets straight As and is really nice to his friends, she added.
In his interview last summer Sutherland said his dream is to one day play major league baseball. Pushed on the subject, he insisted that he was not afraid of jinxing himself by making statements like that because he has the energy and will to back up his dreams. If he plays baseball for Coast Union with the same skill and verve that he showed in football, he will be making a strong case for himself.
