In her Dec. 2 viewpoint, Dorothy Schlitz makes a compelling argument for maintaining the local senior services that may be lost if sequestration occurs on Jan. 1. She argues that Congress should make rational budget choices, but apparently does not realize that every discretionary spending program can be substantiated with equally compelling arguments; that’s why Congress made the decision to simply cut all discretionary spending by 8.2 percent. They couldn’t decide which programs were more “worthy”! (Unfortunately this $109 billion savings makes only a small dent in our national annual budget deficit of more than $1 trillion!)

Her warning that home delivered meals to seniors may be reduced from five times a week to three times a week doesn’t compute, however. That implies a 40 percent versus an 8 percent reduction!
