Health care obscenity

San Luis ObispoDecember 2, 2012

It is obscene that in a country as rich as this (yes, despite the economy, this is a wealthy nation) people die from preventable illnesses. People in this country are opposed to notfor-profit nationalized health care, but there is no real discussion and no healthy debate about the issue.

A for-profit health care system is simply outrageous. Can you imagine if our police and fire departments were for-profit? Only those who could afford to pay would be assisted. Or imagine a for-profit educational system — only wealthy people would obtain an education. (In fact, we do know about for-profit colleges, and they have come under scrutiny for leaving students with crippling debt, classes that don’t transfer to accredited institutions and useless degrees.)

We consider education and safety to be rights — why not access to health care?
