Morro Bay hits late shot to win at H.I.T. tournament

The tournament host Morro Bay High boys basketball team defeated North Bakersfield 56-53 at the H.I.T. tournament Friday night.

Xavier Alfaro scored 11 points in the third quarter to help close the gap, but the Pirates trailed until the fourth quarter. With seven seconds left in the game Elijah Lampley hit a 3-pointer that broke the tie and won the game.

Alfaro was the leading scorer with 19 points followed by Luke Munds with 14 and Zach Smith with 10.

In other games at the tournament:

San Luis Obispo 49, Tamalpais 31

San Luis Obispo (1-1) cruised by Tamalpais behind David Thoreson’s 20 points. Blake Shapazian and Kwab Farkye each had 12 points.

Michael Thomas led Tamalpais with eight points.

Arroyo Grande 49, Fallbrook 39

Matt Willkomm had 13 points including three 3-point goals to lead Arroyo Grande to a victory.

Brennan Rivera added nine points for the Eagles.

Independence 70, Atascadero 68

Ryan O’Connell had 15 points and seven rebounds for Atascadero, but the Greyhounds (0-2) fell to Independence.

Joe Johnson had 14 points and three steals, Robbie Berwick had 11 points, six rebounds and six assists, Jared Studemann had 11 points and six rebounds and Brady Youngquist had 12 points for Atascadero.

Coast Union at Sierra Pacific Tournament

Quinton Raethke had 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Broncos in a 45-37 victory against Paramount Bard.

Angel Avina had eight points and both Gehrig Kniffen and Alan Hernandez had six points for Coast Union. The Broncos (2-1) will play for third place today.
