DeCou Lumber, in business in Atascadero for 75 years, closes Saturday

Published: November 30, 2012

DeCou Lumber Co. & Hardware, one of Atascadero's oldest businesses that announced its closure in June, is shutting its doors for good on Saturday.

The company – which dates back to 1937 - filed for bankruptcy last summer. Company president Jay DeCou, who has been with the business for 42 years, previously said the recession and competition with national retailers meant crippling dips in revenue for the family lumberyard and hardware shop.

An auction is planned to take place Saturday onsite at 8965 El Camino Real to liquidate all remaining stock and supplies. Auction items include equipment such as trucks, forklifts, tools, lumber, electrical and plumbing equipment, scaffolding and office gear, according to a news release.

The auction is open to the public and contractors, with bidding to begin at 10 a.m. Those interested are invited to preview the auction items Friday until 4:30 p.m. and prior to the sale on Saturday.
