Prep Roundup: Mission Prep girls win opening tournament game

The Royals face Arroyo Grande today in the second round of local tournament

The Mission Prep girls basketball team defeated visiting Bishop Diego 41-39 in the opening game of the inaugural Jay Cowitz Invitational on Wednesday at Mission Prep.

Noelle Laird had 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Royals (1-0), who will face Arroyo Grande today.

Connor Storlie had 15 points, and Grace Ready added four for Mission Prep, which trailed 30-28 entering the fourth quarter.


Coast Union 58, Alpaugh 10

Logan Brandt had 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Broncos to a win in their season opener.

Quintin Raethke had 17 points and eight steals, and Alan Hernandez added eight points for Coast Union.

Midland 52, Coastal Christian 43

Brandon Spiller had 20 points, six rebounds and five steals, and Shane Borgstrom had 10 points and seven boards in the season-opening loss for the Conquerors.


Arroyo Grande 11,Cabrillo 7

Brooklyn VanderVeen and Melanie Popovich had three goals apiece, and Hannah Wadlow had eight saves in the Eagles’ season opener.

San Luis Obispo 16, Nipomo 3

Emma Tietje scored three goals, and five Tigers had two goals apiece in the rout of the visiting Titans. 

Anna Mullen had five saves in goal for San Luis Obispo (2-0).


San Luis Obispo 2, Cabrillo 1

On Tuesday, the Tigers won their season opener behind goals from Lukas Holocher and Jesus Vazquez. Holocher’s goal was assisted by Michael Zakaria, and Vazquez scored on a penalty kick.
