It was a chilly, windy afternoon and evening Nov. 24 at Coast Unions football field, but the energy and competition on the thick green field was red hot as alumni teams battled current Coast Union soccer teams.
The womens match was first, and according to alumni organizer Schuli Mercado Stathem, the current Lady Broncos played an amazing match, scoring 5 goals in 19 shots, and winning 5-0 over the alumni.
Twenty-five minutes into the match, junior Christina Plasencia scored the first goal (later Plasencia would score again). Sophomore Remy Corbet also scored two goals (both in the second half) and freshman Paulina Torres scored one goal.
The goalkeeper for the Lady Broncos was senior Gabriela Bucio; she made three good saves and Stathem, in goaling for the alumni, gave up the five goals but also saved 14 shots.
On the boys side, the alumni won (1-0) on a controversial play. The only goal scored was actually stopped by the Bronco goal keeper, but the officials ruled that the Coast Union goal keeper was inside the line (in goal) so the point was given to the alumni.
