Dunbar Brewing in Santa Margarita has packed up its kegs and tap handles and is heading to a larger location down the road.
Owner, bartender and brewer Chris Chambers will open the 1,600-square-foot public house and brewery Saturday at 2200 El Camino Real. The new location, closer to the towns retail center, can hold more than twice as many people as the former bars 20 and has the potential to become a 10-barrel brewhouse.
After doing this for four years (in Santa Margarita) and listening to the patrons, weve made adjustments, Chambers said earlier this week.
He said customers asked for a larger place and an outdoor area. The new spot has a patio.
There will be 14 taps pouring guest beers as well as Chambers five core beers. Dunbar beers have been available only at Chambers bar, and for now, he aims to keep it that way.
Were one of the pioneers a small brewery with no distribution, he said. Thats something that didnt exist here before we opened.
Chambers started Dunbar in 1997 in Los Osos and moved his three-barrel brewing operation to Santa Margarita in 2008. In 2009, he opened a bar in very tight quarters: a 480-square-foot spot tucked behind Ancient Peaks Winerys tasting room. That location closed Sunday.
Chambers could not provide information on annual profits, but he said Dunbars yearly production has grown from 90 barrels in 2008 to 126 barrels this year. Chambers hopes to hit 150 barrels in 2013. Other plans for next year: Hire several employees and plant an acre of hops on property in Los Osos.
