A 17-year-old Paso Robles resident was arrested Sunday after stealing a car, police say.

The incident began at 12:50 p.m. when a man reported that his car had been stolen in the 700 block of Creston Road. The man told police that he had left the car unlocked and with the engine running so he could run an errand, according to a news release.

A short time later, witnesses told the man that a male suspect had taken the car and left the area. Police were initially unable to locate the car but at 2:05 p.m. the car was spotted in the 2800 block of Riverside Avenue.

An officer followed the car, waiting for backup to arrive, but the suspect abandoned the vehicle in the parking lot of Motel 6 on Black Oak Drive and fled on foot. The officer chased the suspect who threw away handgun before being arrested. It was later determined that the handgun was a replica firearm.

The suspect was charged with felony car theft and booked into the county juvenile services center. His name was not disclosed because he is a juvenile.
